Providing the necessary support in the personal, professional and social development of all our pupils -especially the ones with SENs- and developing their knowledge and skills are among the primary objectives of our institution. Our institution supports all the educational staff and students, especially students with SENs, for participation to all formal or informal education opportunities, to all social, educative and artistic activities at all levels: local, national and transnational levels. We have been continuously taking active part in the projects related first of all with special needs education, and also related with all educative spheres, science, entrepreneurship and art, civic voluntary citizenship and democracy. Our organization have been encouraging all our local citizens, our students and their families to participate and take active roles in international projects for achieving to obtain a European quality standart in all spheres of education and in all areas of social life in our region.
We have been trying to improve the skills and achievements of all our students, especially the students with SENs, in all spheres of the life by interdisciplinary, formal and informal educational methods. Some of the fundamental methods we are applying in formation of all these education methods consist of intermixturing of different areas of life with each other such as art, sports, ICT, science, languages, music… etc. We have been cooperating with all public and private institutes in our region and with our transnational partners. We have been organizing many activities with the local sport authorities, Anamur Municipality, Anamur Youth Center and many other local art, culture and education NGOs and enterprises.
We have been trying to improve the skills and achievements of all our students, especially the students with disabilities, in all spheres of the life. One of the fundamental target groups of our directorate in this field is the youngsters with mental disabilities. First of all, our Guidance Research Center continuously develops training programs, integration activities for these students. Besides that, for many years, we have been also cooperating with 3 rehabilitations centres in Anamur. We have been developing integration and rehabilitation programs for the students studying in our schools and also for the families of these youngsters.
With the cooperation of our Guidance Research Center with the Directorate of Turkish Ministry of Youth in Anamur, we have been trying to empower the youngsters by inspiring their creative side with art, sport, STEAM and other activities. We developed many projects built on networking practices and innovative methodologies interconnecting art, ICT and disabilities with each other and with the fields of employability and readiness of the pupils to labor markets and job opportunities in both cyber and all real spheres of the life.
The maincornerstones of our approach consist of Increasing their capacity to engage in life long learning opportunities and to get integration in every aspect of life by supporting them and their families. Our directorate develops new work programs/agendas for raising willingness and consciousness of these youngsters to improve their own artistic and productive capacities, and for preparing them for the future employment opportunities by our academic, vocational education programs and extended real or cyber networks and innovative entrepreneurship activities. We cooperate with all the NGOs, companies, private and public organizations in our region for finding new real and cyber channels that may provide our pupils with disabilities new opportunities to get involved in all spheres of the life.
This year, we began two new projects directly focusing on special needs education. One is entitled as “INCLUDL-Schools: Promoting Inclusive Schools in Europe Through Universal Design for Learning and Service-Learning” and the other as “E- ducation Platform and Practices For E-Specially Arts-Abled Schools and Families”. In the context of these projects, we are developing a methodological framework -a curriculum- to combine and amalgamate SEN with art-activities. Besides setting up a family support and a curriculum e-platform website developed by MOOC and JOOMLA! just like we did in our prior projects; with these 2 new projects our networking website will be based upon the “community builder” module and other cyber commmunity extensions. These projects will be very useful for especially all the pupils with SENs for undertanding interrelations of different areas of real life and cyber world, and also for their families, our schools and teachers.
Our institution consists of six units: 3 schools with special curriculum, Departments of Education, Student dormitory, Labor and Employment Centre and Specialized mobile pedagogical service. Very active part of the CJL is a Department for project activities. Among the largest international projects of department is the International Year festival “Play With Me”, which is covering over 30 events from various fields (sports, culture etc.) throughout the year. All events are international in nature and seek for the implementation of inclusion, therefore, for the active involvement of children and young people with special needs in the wider society and to demolish stereotypes about persons with disabilities that are present even today.
All together has over 200 special education teachers and other educators, psychologists, social workers and other technical staff and more than 400 students yearly. The target group of our activities are children and youth with special needs.
We are one of the biggest instututions, providing education and schooling for children and youngsters with special needs. Most of them are coming from emigrants, roma, refuge and low socio-economic backgrounds. We enable them to aquire formal education. However, as our experiences have shown, the formal education is more successful if it includes the non- formal aspect. Having this in mind, we have been organising different training courses, especialy for young people, but also for parents, professionals in various fields and for our employees. We also
participate in many international projects. As part of the programs “Youth”, ‘Youth in Action’ and ‘Erasmus + we have carried out a number of international activities in last 15 years. More than 50 international cooperation were realised within the centre. These we attended together with our children and adolescents as participants (cooperating with partners from almost all Europe.).
In the recent year, we have also organised and lead a lot of different projects in youth-educational field: like several different projects in program Comenius, Leonardo da Vinci, Youth Exchange, Training course, Seminar, Job shadowing… Since 2010 we are involved in the EVS projects. In recent years we have hosted over 30 EVS volunteers, from both programme as well as partner countries. We also organise the International festival “Play with me” which promotes active participation of children and youth with special needs and margin groups in society. As mentioned above we have many non-formal learning activities to complement a formal education. Lots of theese are sport or sport related, one of them is swimming program for our students for several years now.
Several of our projects deal with preserving the environment by renewing old objects and making new use out of them. We use different methods to reach the projects’ goals, one of which being the so called experiential pedagogics which in practice means that we use hands-on experience to teach the participants new skills (learning-by-doing).
We are well skilled in the field of artistic projects; together with The Association of Inclusive Culture, we coorganise the biggest Slovenian art contest for young artists. Furthermore, we organise different inclusive art workshops when participating at our own events as well as those, organised by other instititions.
All of the team members have constantly been educating themselves and in the past years have acquired more specialized knowledge about autism, ADHD, behaviour and emotional difficulties, which is important for the quality of our work.
